CAS NO. 6980-18-3

Kasugamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that was originally isolated in 1965, from Streptomyces kasugaensis, a Streptomyces strain found near the Kasuga shrine in Nara, Japan. Kasugamycin was discovered by Hamao Umezawa, who also discovered kanamycin and bleomycin, as a drug that prevent growth of a fungus causing rice blast disease. It was later found to inhibit bacterial growth also. It exists as a white, crystalline substance with the chemical formula C₁₄H₂₈ClN₃O₁₀. It is also known as kasumin.

It has special effect against rice blight, and it also can be used against sheath and culm blight of rice and wheat, and root corruption of vegetable, stem scorch of cotton and bean, nut germ of rice and big spot of corn. Control of Rhizoctonia solani in rice, potatoes, vegetables, strawberries, tobacco, ginger and other crops; damping-off diseases of cotton, rice and sugar beet, etc. Applied as a foliar spray, soil drench, seed dressing, or by soil incorporation, at 1.25-1.56g/ha (liquid), 9-12 g/ha (DL formulation), and 0.090 mg/kg (DL or seed dressing).
