Fijn wit poeder. Relatieve dichtheid 3,70. Smeltpunt is 1497 ℃. Verwarm tot 1340 ℃ ontleding en laat kooldioxide vrij. Onoplosbaar in water, enigszins oplosbaar in ammoniak, ammoniumcarbonaat, onoplosbaar in alcohol, oplosbaar in ammoniumchloride, ammoniumnitraat. Het wordt gekookt met ammoniumchloride en omgezet in strontiumchloride. Het reageert met zuren, waarbij koolstofdioxide vrijkomt.
